Borgo Egnazia Review

Borgo Egnazia is one of Italy’s finest luxury resort hotels,. The hotel is the ultimate high quality hotel with amazing architecture with an emphasis on white sandstone, the orginal stone used for the design of the houses in this part of Italy

Offering the visitor luxury rooms in the La Corte main building or the Il Borgo Apulian style village, where most of the family rooms are found with its central Piazza. The Due Camini restaurant is stunning and the Vair Spa exceptional, there are also two beach clubs in the summer season months, although the sheltered pool areas are exceptionally landscaped, sheltered and are adult only and family pool areas.

"One of Italy's finest hotels..."

The resort is tucked away in the beautiful and unspoiled region of Puglia on the Adriatic Coast, half way between Bari and Brindisi. This is a magical part of Italy which has very little tourist development, so a real opportunity to explore a wonderful undiscovered region of Italy basing yourself at Borgo Egnazia.

We would highly recommend flying into Bari, as it is closer to the resort than Brindisi. Bari is about 45 minutes transfer time by a high way from Borgo Egnazia. There are flight options from London Gatwick with Easyjet and British Airways, with a Stansted flight option also using Ryanair.com. There is also an Easyjet service from London Gatwick to Brindisi.

The hotel is split into 3 sections really, there are the luxury rooms in the main building known as La Corte, a building which hosts the majority of the resorts facilities including the Spa and the Indoor Pool and the main restaurant. The décor of the rooms here blend Mediterranean tradition and modern contemporary design. The categories are divided into 4, starting with the cheapest, La Corte Bella, La Corte Splendida, La Corte Magnifica and the stunning Egnazia Suite. All bedrooms offer either a super king size bed or 2 seprate queen size beds, stone bathrooms with either a balcony or a private garden. The rooms are sheer quality with great attention to detail using soft cream and white colour contrasts throughout. The Borgo is the quieter option so most suited for couples booking.

The Il Borgo section of the resort is the heart of the resort surrounding the superb central piazza, the internal and external architectural design replicates the traditional styling of ancient Apulian villages in the locality. Il Borgo is mostly where families reserve or large parties for weddings etc as the rooms categories are bigger and offer more space. During the summer months the Borgo comes to life in the Piazza, a venue used for big parties, cocktail receptions, outside buffets and film shows etc, ideal for all the family. It really is a unique setting and has loads of ambience, as you feel that you are within a pueblo white wash village. The far side of Il Borgo hosts the family areas, including a family pool, kids club and Teen’s Club. The rooms within Il Borgo start with the gorgeous Casetta Bella, the Casetta Splendida, the Casetta Magnifica, the Borgo Magnifica and the best of all the Borgo Splendida.

The Spa at Borgo Egnazia is a main attraction and every detail and treatment is infused with the soul of southern Italy and particularly of Apulia, all the product used is home grown/produced from this part of the country. The Spa won an award in 2013 by Tatler Magazine. The architectural styling is serene and tranquil, the treatments and staff are exceptional.

A lovely parkland golf course with a sniff of links as all holes look out over the sea – relatively flat it is a very easy golf course to walk but buggies can be hired. The course is laid out over coastal terrain with a mixture of trees, wild bushes and some water features giving it plenty of variety. The greens are tricky without being too difficult and the bunkers are deep enough to be challenging. You should be able to play to your handicap here, the golf course is supplemented by a very fine old style clubhouse and terrace and a Golf Academy and driving range. The golf course is too far to walk to from the lobby of the Borgo, but a shuttle buggy service will take you down to the clubhouse.

The restaurants are spectacular, with local produce being a major influence. The Due Camini is the classic Italian a la carte restaurant with stunning inside and al fresco dining areas, top class service and the smartest and most polite and efficient of staff. The cuisine blends well from the local farms, with a mix of lamb, pork and beef and the superb fresh fish and seafood from the port if Savelletri. The fruit and vegetables are exceptional, many of which are grown in the gardens or very close by. You can in the summer months eat at the Pescheria da Vito – a fish restaurant at the Beach Club which has a wonderful outlook over the ocean, perfect for a long lazy lunch, whilst the Trattoria Mia Cucina is a much more casual and less expensive dining venue in the Il Borgo section of the resort, here you can dine more simply and enjoy fantastic Tapas , home baked bread and pizzas from the stone oven.

There are some beautiful historic local villages and towns which boast the old classical Apulian style architecture, in fact one venue is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE site and well worth a day out to visit. The coastline is perhaps less dramatic than the interior which is beautiful to explore. You could hire a car for a day or two or take an excursion. If you wish to play other golf courses during your stay we would recommend one particularly but it is more than 1 hour drive away called Riva Dei Tessali.

The main hotel bar called Bar del Portico is set within an idyllic lounge area, with an indoor area with a fireplace and chimney and an area under sherry barrel vaults. In the evening sitting outside it is very atmospheric with an array of stylish lighting and views across the two main pool areas. The live music and ambience here is exceptional. Borgo has two other bars, Capanno and L’Angoletto which is located pool side.

There are some superb amenities for children with both a Kid’s Club and a Teen’s Club with an array of indoor and outdoor options, depending on the weather. No doubt that in mainland Italy Borgo Egnazia is known as the best family friendly resort hotel.

In the summer season there are two beach clubs you can choose from, one which has a wonderful fish restaurant and sun loungers scattered across lawn or sand areas and with lovely sea views, with great sea access for swimming from rocks via ladders, or the other beach club which has a bigger beach area but not the restaurant on site. Courtesy shuttles run to both beach clubs from the hotel. Within the resort itself there are two exceptional adult only pool areas one terraced above the other with lots of sun bathing space, with ample sun loungers and a really sheltered setting. Whilst on the other side of Il Borgo, the family pool areas are located which is ideal, just below the Trattoria. All types of client are therefore looked after in this concept.

The private beaches are as follows...

Located inside the property, this beach is of the rocky kind, and contains the WATER SPORT CENTER, relaxing cabanas and our sea food restaurant. On spring and summer evenings, Cala Masciola comes to life with gala dinners in our restaurant Pescheria da Vito, jazz concerts on the shore and parties that last well into sunrise, creating a marvelous atmosphere of conviviality and light-heartedness. Cala Masciola is the Borgo’s direct connection to the sea. (Open: May, 1 to September, 30)

This beach is a 5-min. drive away from Borgo Egnazia. Unlike Cala Masciola, La Fonte is a sandy beach, making it perfect for families. It offers a game park for the youngest, loungers, gazebos and a bar. Its location also makes La Fonte an oasis of peace for both parents and kids. The crystal clear waters of progressive depth, the thin sand and the kids’ game park make La Fonte the perfect place for a family vacation: while kids play in total safety, the parents can relax completely on the comfortable loungers. (Open: June, 1 to September, 30)
