Constance continue to excel with their flagship golf resort on the east coast of Mauritius, with about 30 years of history in servicing golfers from Europe, with two very contrasting golf courses. The Links and Legends are back to their best with the latter having major work on all the greens so they are very good again after some problems in the middle of 2016, fairways have been made wider and some greens bigger, just to make it a little more playable. Whilst fairways on 5 holes have been raised and improved drainage installed.

Venue for the Mauritius Open professional Tournament every December, the Legends is as testing as it gets because 14 out of the 18 holes have prominent water features and you are playing at sea level here. The Legends is never long, but with so many lateral water hazards and impenetrable bushes off fairway, you just have to be straight all the way. Our advice is leave your driver behind and play your way round with a hybrid off the tee, or on longer holes a 3 wood. The course has small greens which are very grainy, adding to the difficulty. The club has an old fashioned appeal and you can hire a caddy for a small fee, which we would recommend, rather than hiring a buggy. The lovely quaint clubhouse looks out over the 18th and 9th greens and the large water hazard between is often frequented by a herd of deer who come down for an evening drink. Watch out for the 17th - the par 3 across the estuary, which is all carry and requires a steely nerve.
The Links course is just 2 kms from the Belle Mare Hotel and has a separate clubhouse, which is much bigger and more ostentatious than at the Legends. The Links also boasts the better practice ground - much more space, better turf and magnificent views across Mauritius. Buggies on the Links are no longer mandatory, costing circa 30 euros, you cannot hire caddies. All holes are set over high land, with the benefit of elevated tees, which allow you to have mostly downhill tee shots and there are loads of dog legs around rocky terrain with wild vegetation, in fact the Links is laid out over the grounds of an old sugar plantation. The greens are very big and much faster than the Legends and much more undulating, making the short game very tricky. The Links is longer, has less water, but has much more testing second shots than the Legends, whilst its biggest attraction, is its wonderful vistas across the Island and down to the Sea.
We had a lovely time in Belle Mare and would definitely go back there. As you know it has a big percentage of return visitors and most of the people we spoke to had been before. Some had been coming for years and some for four /five weeks at a time!It is difficult to put your finger on exactly why other than to say it has a friendly welcoming atmosphere which makes you feel relaxed and totally at home. How that happens is more difficult to define. Factors must include very visible presence of top management, continuity and 'can do' friendliness of the staff, and the feeling of everyone knowing each other created by the returning clients. As you leave everyone says ’see you next year’ and they mean it.Other comments - two golf courses but neither as playable as say the Heritage. Both a bit quirky in places. Playing the Links texas scramble an excellent way of getting to know everyone. But good atmosphere, camaraderie and fun on both courses.Staff really go the extra mile to make you feel welcome and comfortable. My impression was little regular tipping going on but people leaving a tip at the facility provided at the end of their trip. I thought the Crystal package very worthwhile if only because you don’t have to worry about choosing whether or not to afford the high price for a drink. I gather that the prices are high in all the Mauritian resorts. May well return in 2017. Thanks again for the arrangements all went well as usual. David & Marian Earle (Nov.16)
We're home after an amazing holiday. Everything went like clockwork thank you. Chris Allen (Oct.16)
