Widely regarded as Europe’s most popular golfer’s hotel, Penina located on the wild west Algarve is set in a wonderful 140 hectare’s estate and reflects its culture through a natural fusion of English architecture, Portuguese hospitality and high levels of service. Penina has 3 golf courses, the Championship, the Resort and the par 3 nine hole course, which offers ample variety to all types of golfer from the most difficult to the easiest for beginners. This is a resort which has such a rich history, a golf course designed by the famous Henry Cotton and has hosted many Portuguese Opens, it is legendary across the world, but its beauty lies in its timeless location and tradition, it is a haven of peace and tranquillity with wonderful ambience and old fashioned levels of service. How does Penina re-invent itself and remain as Europe’s no 1 most popular golf holiday resort? Well that’s easy, it is all about offering great value for money and these days residents will receive more free golf than they have for a number of years and if you book early you can get ideal tee times. In the summer months Penina also has great children facilities, with their first class Penguin Village experience, one of the big improvements has been the practice facilities – the driving range is now excellent. We recommend booking rooms with pool view at Penina for a small supplement. Penina year round is the best value golf resort in Portugal.

This is a great golf course originally designed by Henry Cotton and laid out through old rice fields over predominantly flat land, but with lovely mixed deciduous forest lining most of the 18 fairways and canny burns crisscrossing the golf course, making it very tricky on a number of holes with later water hazards coming into play. Penina is tough for two reasons, you have to hit it long off the tee and it is heavily bunkered. Accuracy is important for strategic positioning for second shots but the fairways are not tight. The greens are superb and well protected. Home of the Portuguese Open many years Penina is legendary.
The Resort Course is not a push over and is almost as long as the Championship nines, it is laid out through eucalyptus trees and is characterised by some long par 4 holes. It makes a nice change from the main 18 holes and is a must play option during your stay. The greens, fairways and tees are manicured to the same standard. The Academy is an ideal par 3 9 hole course for beginners or good players needing to brush up on their short iron play.
Overall the holiday was wonderful. The organisation by Elegant Golf worked perfectly – flights, transfers and hotel.Penina is a great location with everything on site and only a short taxi ride into nearby Alvor. The hotel has a luxurious feel but the service is patchy and not as food as it used to be. Reception staff are really good but in the bar and buffet they seemed ‘stretched ‘ and you sometimes felt ignored. The Dukes Grill, however, was a memorable experience with excellent food and service. The wine selection was generally good and reasonably priced but the coffee was truly awful and commented upon by most guests. It was also very irritating to pay so much for the water which was priced differently in different parts of the hotel. There were no water fountains on the golf course and the catering cart did not come round frequently enough considering the heat. The staff in the pro shop and on the golf course looked after us very well. The course was in good condition even though it got a lot of use! We played with some really nice people. A great resort, good accommodation, excellent food and the Championship course a challenge! All staff were very helpful and the golf club changing room service great. Anonymous (Feb.16)
Can't speak highly enough of the service provided - everything was done for us down to the finest detail, leaving us to just look forward to and enjoy the holiday. Great hotel and golf, and great value too. C.Corcoran (Oct.15)
Hi, we had an excellent trip and everything went very smoothly, thank you. Transfers excellent. The Monarch flights were the best low cost airline we had been on. The hotel room was satisfactory and well cleaned. Lack of heated pool a disappointment. Bars and leisure areas very spacious. The breakfast & dinners were very high quality, the buffets weren’t as big as most 5* hotels but they made up for it with quality food. The service in the pro-shop was first class with free daily shoe clean & club storage. Bhavesh Patel, March 2014
Attention to customer satisfaction supports the service we received during our wonderful stay. We look forward to seeing you again next year - Tony Matthews
