Top 20 Championship Golf Courses

The Links at Fancourt

Only accessible for Fancourt guests, this takes our vote as the best of the best, Gary Player created a masterpiece of a links course here near George, the ultimate tough links challenge.

Teeth of the Dog Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic really does have a small array of the finest courses in the world, the Teeth of The Dog is magnificent, 18 amazing holes with panoramas of the ocean and the Chavon River.

Leopard Creek

Set in the southern area of the Kruger National Park, voted no 1 in South Africa, Leopard Creek is so impressive and has so much natural wild beauty, the only problem is it is miles from anywhere, we have two boutique game reserve lodges not far away which can be combined with stays in other parts of South Africa, namely Lukimbi Safari Lodge and Sabi Sabi Game Reserve. Worthy of being in our top 3 for sure.

Pelican Hill North, California

Situated south of California, with a high quality award winning hotel on site and a fantastic sister course (the South), Pelican Hill is for us the most exhilarating golf course on the planet, the shot making from the elevated tees is simply outstanding on every hole, with big drops, hills and valleys with panoramas across and down to the Pacific Ocean, testing dog legs and roller coaster fairways, slick and subtle large greens with classic marble sand bunkering. The views down to Newport Beach are memorable, this is one of the most exclusive golf resorts in the USA and ranked 1 in California, across 18 holes Pebble Beach is not as impressive as either Pelican Hill course in our opinion.

Corales Dominican Republic

Corales is a Tom Fazio masterpiece in the Dominican, simply breath taking, 18 holes all winding their way around the Caribbean Sea. Staying at the new Westin Punta Cana gives you access to this dream like experience and the sister course La Cana is also excellent. Corales just misses out on our top 4 spots.

Arabella Golf Club Western Cape South Africa

Arabella Golf Club is the most scenic course in South Africa, set around the gorgeous Arabella Western Cape Hotel it has magnificent views of the Bot Lagoon and Estuary, with amazing wildlife and bird life, on the other side there are wonderful views to the mountains, the course is immaculate and so subtle with every twist and turn – the finishing holes are dramatic but holes 8 and 9 are superb.

Troon North Pinnacle Arizona

Just missing out in the top 5 in our chosen list, set in the Sonoran Desert where the Cacti and natural wild desert vegetation are at their most spectacular. The Pinnacle sits next to the Monument Course and is an iconic golfing experience in the USA. Pure desert golf in its most natural state. We recommend clients wishing to play Troon North to stay at the classic Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale, courtesy transfers are available to the clubhouse.

Thracian Cliffs Bulgaria

This spectacular golf course hosted the World Matchplay Event in 2013 and was a resounding success, in terms of dramatic sea and cliff views, there is no comparison, Pinnacle Point and Pezula in South Africa, Pebble Beach in California and Pelican Hill south of LA are close. Elevated tees and big carries across ravines and memorable views and shot making at all times across the Black Sea. For accommodation we recommend the Lighthouse Golf Resort or the luxury apartments on the course.

Innisbrook Copperhead Gulf Coast, Florida

Regular host of the USA PGA Tours Transitional Championship, the Copperhead is built over natural pine covered sand ridges giving the course a natural amphitheatre on every hole, crystal lakes and emerald green fairways contrast so well with the azure blue skies. To play here you should always stay at the luxurious accommodation on site at Innisbrook.

Heritage Golf Club Mauritius

We rate the course as the best in Mauritius, which is not easy as they are all very strong challengers, the Heritage is magnificent, because it has so much contrast, water holes, dog legs, blind shots, elevated tees and subtle holes such as short par 4s, with really difficult crowned greens. Most holes are on the ridge top with magical views of the Indian Ocean and the two hotels attached, the Heritage Awali and the Heritage Le Telfair. Golf is free at both these hotels on this challenging course.

The Green Monkey Barbados

This course makes the top 20 because it has such a wonderful outlook of the Caribbean Sea, set close to and in an old quarry, rolling terrain with wonderful vistas across the stunning Sandy Lane Estate. What makes the course really special is you have to stay at the Sandy Lane Hotel to play it at an affordable price and they only have 1 hour’s worth of tee times per day.

The Els Course by Anahita Mauritius

The Els course at Anahita is on the east coast next to the Four Seasons Mauritius and the Anahita Resort Suites accommodation. The course is long but majestic with wonderful scenery, wildlife and trees or vegetation. The course is definitely in our view the best design by The Big Easy around the World. Some of the finishing holes and early holes have simply fabulous sea views of the Indian Ocean. Holes 17 and 18 take your breath away. Stay at Four Seasons and Anahita Resort Suites and qualify for free golf and buggy hire! The Els Course qualifies for our select top 20, above venues like Tamarina, Belle Mare Links and Le Touessrok, some competition!

TPC Stadium Course Sawgrass

The TPC Stadium is the venue for the world’s 5th major the Player’s Championship. Hosted normally in the month of May it is one of the USPGA’s most spectacular courses and normally brings some very exciting finishes particularly because of the par 3 17th – remember Sergio Garcia’s collapse there in 2013. To play here you need to stay at the Marriott Sawgrass Hotel on site, it is the best value way to include the course in a package.

Monte Rei Algarve

Monte Rei on Portugal’s East Algarve is a great golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus and still relatively unknown – it opened about 14 years ago in the late 1990s. Monte Rei is a great test of golf from start to finish – situated inland on the rolling wild Algarve mountain scenery, the shot making at all times is amazing and the greens and bunkers very special. This is for us Portugal’s finest golf course with an elegant clubhouse. We highly recommend staying at the Monte Rei Villas on the course, superb luxury accommodation and perfect for a short break for a group.

Penha Longa Lisbon

Penha Longa is still a stunning golf course even though it has been around for 20 years, benefitting from a significant recent face lift, a Robert Trent Jones masterpiece, stunning mountain scenery in the hills of Sintra, just 15 minutes above the Estoril coast. Rolling terrain, some holes through pine trees, some open stadium holes – great par threes with water carries. The courses likes adjacent to the stylish and luxurious Penha Longa Golf Resort Hotel which is arguably the finest in Portugal.

The Montgomerie Belek

The Montgomerie is the most improved golf course in Belek since its inception in 2007. Hosting the inaugural Turkish Open in 2013 and having seen such a marvellous climax with a hole in one by Jamie Donaldson on his 70th hole to go joint leader and DuBuisson’s stunning win under pressure. The course is now immaculate with the biggest umbrella pine trees in Belek and sand ridges which flank most fairways. No doubt it is the most polished and manicured and now the most exclusive of all the Belek courses, to play here you really have to stay at the Maxx Royal or the Voyage Belek hotels to get access and you are most of the time only allowed to play it once per stay.

San Lorenzo Algarve

For many years San Lorenzo was ranked 2 in Europe behind Valderrama, these days we still highly rate it and it has made our top 20 courses, the holes that make it special are the 6th to the 9th and 16-18 all of which run close to the Ria Formosa Estuary, or have tough carries over man made lakes. The 17th and 18th are fantastic. To play here you need to stay at the recently refurbished Dona Filipa Hotel, stay 7 nights and receive 4 rounds of golf complimentary.
View Dona Filipa Hotel

Finca Cortesin Costa Del Sol

Finca Cortesin hosted the World MatchPlay Event two years in a row and is worthy of a top 20 spot, it is a bit controversial because it ousts Valderrama, Sotogrande Old and La Reserva, all of which are close by. Finca just has the edge because it is so spectacular with lots of elevated tees and canyon type holes. It is a joy from start to finish, a roller coaster of a round is assured and guests can enjoy the finest boutique golfer’s hotel in Spain adjacent.

Emirates Majlis

The Majilis continues to dominate the courses in the Middle East and if you ask the cream of European Golf Professionals, they think it is the best course on the Swing Tour in January and February. The course plays almost like a links, or desert course, waste sand areas flank many fairways – the back drop of the sky scrapers gives it a surreal perspective, the par 3s are first class and hole 18 is unbeatable as a closing hole. We recommend the One & Only Royal Mirage on Jumeirah Beach particularly.

PGA Sultan

Host for the Turkish Airlines Match Play one off event in 2012 won by Justin Rose, the Sultan is the best manicured course in Belek and a real tiger challenge, in fact both Tiger and Rory played here also in 2012. Great variety of holes through pines and eucalyptus. The last holes have some water which really test the nerve. To play here you really have to stay at the Sirene Belek Resort or Kempinsk the Dome.
