Top 10 Spanish Resorts

We thought it would be fun to give our views on the top 10 resort golf courses in Spain and where best to stay to play these stand out golf courses! We accept that this is an unofficial ranking based on our own travels across Spain over the last 5 years.

To qualify each course has to be adjacent to a resort hotel. The opinion has been formed by the sheer design quality and excitement of the golf courses. If we were to pick one course without a hotel as our number one we would plump for Anfi Tauro in Gran Canaria, a spectacular Robert Von Hagge canyon, desert course close to Maspalomas, playable from Sheraton Salobre.

Finca Cortesin

No 2 Finca Cortesin

Finca Cortesin is one of Spain’s very special venues where the shot making on every hole is ultimately incredibly exhilarating. The course is dramatic, a roller coaster, superb dog legs, rolling terrain and great par 3s over stunning values. The visual enjoyment of playing here is hard to rival in Europe and of course it hosted the Volvo Matchplay twice. To enjoy this course we highly recommend staying at the hotel Finca Cortesin, but you can play it on special packages at Kempinski Bahia or Gran Hotel Elba Estepona which are not far away.

Barcelo Montecastillo Golf & Spa Resort

No 3 Montecastillo

Montecastillo Golf located close to Jerez in Cadiz is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course. Having hosted the Volvo Masters several times where Monty often was the winner, the course is a big test of golf. The course features many raised greens and heavy fairway and greenside bunkering, making it incredibly tough around the greens. The fairways are wide and inviting, but the difficulty comes on the second shots. The challenging holes come at the last 6 holes which are outstanding and have several prominent water features. Only way to play this superb course, staying on our premium all inclusive plan at the Barcelo, it includes daily golf, buggy and golf club rental.

Abama Golf & Spa Resort

No 4 Ritz-Carlton Abama

This is our most popular golf course in Spain and the Islands, designed by Dave Thomas, all 18 holes have stunning vistas of Mount Teide and the Atlantic Ocean. Elevated tees, plunging fairways down the mountainside, big valleys, ravines, demanding shot making over blind ridges. The course boasts big treacherous greens where 3 putting is not so embarrassing. The golf course is wonderful from start to finish, Holes 2 –4 climb the mountain and then holes 7 head downhill. The back nine are more on the same plateau level through banana plantations and palm groves! Only way to play Abama stay at the outstanding Ritz Carlton, Abama.

Villa Padierna Palace

No 5 Los Flamingos

This under rated course has been fully recognised by Elegant Golf in this publication, the course is unique, a brilliant course for tee shots. Wide generous fairways, but with some great blind shots over ridges, or exhilarating shots from elevated tees. The difficulty at Flamingos comes with the second shots and the fast slippery slopes on the greens! SA superb test of golf. To enjoy here best you should stay on resort at the amazing Villa Padierna Palace where the President of the USA stayed in 2012 for 2 weeks with his family.

Peunte Romano Beach Resort

No 6 Marbella Club Resort

Located on high mountainous landscaping above Benahavis, the Marbella Club Resort course was designed by Dave Thomas and has always been held in great esteem with a distinct air of exclusivity. The course has spectacular panoramas of mountain and ocean on almost every hole. The layout has lots of bunkers and tricky greens and of course many elevation changes. It is one of the Costa del Sol’s most memorable courses and relatively exclusive. To play it we would always recommend you stay at the hotel Puente Romano which is a wonderful beach property. La Cala Resort

No 8 La Cala Las Americas

The Las Americas course at La Cala is one of the most exciting golf courses on the Costa del Sol and certainly the pick of the three La Cala Resort courses, outstanding. Every hole has unbelievable vistas of mountainsides, valleys, ravines and the Mediterranean in the distance. Elevated tees on many holes, it is a classic course for the long driver of the ball. Many of the greens are raised and it is a stunning test of golf, but you do need a buggy to survive. Cabell Robinson excelled with this design. To play here - stay at the lovely and most improved hotel in Spain the La Cala Resort. Stay 7 nights and receive 3 free rounds year round.

Principe Filipe La Manga Club Hotel

No 9 La Manga South

La Manga’s South course has hosted the Spanish Open back in the old days in the 1970s, yes it has been modified since then, but arguably it is still broadly the same layout, Arnold Palmer even won once on the South Course. The course is the flattest of the three but incredibly testing, long and well bunkered, relatively exposed to the wind off Mar Menor. The greens are large and undulating yet fair, one could argue that it has less rough than its sister courses yet it is still the ultimate test of golf on the Estate! To play at La Manga stay at the Principe Felipe and you will qualify for a huge discount off the rack rates.

Sheraton Salobre Golf Resort

No 10 Salobre Old

The Old Course is the course formerly known as the South Course. Opening in 2005 the design is a canyon style course with smallish raised greens, some tight driving holes – located on dramatic mountainsides and in verdant valleys. Shot making here is a real pleasure – the par 3 holes are noteworthy and there are some breath-taking tee shots from high tees. The course is not as spectacular as the New Course but it is much more playable. To play here stay at the excellent Sheraton adjacent or one of the Seaside Hotels in Maspalomas.
